Maulana Azad National Urdu University Hyderabad

Maulana Azad National Urdu University also popularly known as MANUU is a Central University located in Hyderabad city, near Gachi Bowli. The University was established in the year 1998 with the aim to promote Urdu language and to give Education in Urdu.

The faculty and students of Mannu University are drawn from all over India. The university aim is to provide wider access to people desirous of pursuing programmes of higher education and training in Urdu medium through teaching on the campus as well as at a distance and to provide focus on women education.

Maulana Azad National Urdu University was named after India’s 1st Education Minister, Undisputed hero of freedom struggle, and a wonderful scholar of Islam and Urdu literature Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. His birth anniversary is celebrated as national education day.

A unique quality about him was that he always remained much ahead of his age, in years, in many fields. He was running a library, a reading room, debating society before he was 12. He was teaching a class of students, most of whom were twice his age, when he was merely 15.

He edited a number of magazines between 13 and 18 years of age and himself brought out a magazine of high standard at the age of 16. Above all, Maulana Azad remains one of those men of India who in spite of being highly religious represented the true secular Indian culture.

University Campus:

The first Office of the University was established on 20-02-1998 in a rented building at Brindavan Colony, Tolichowki, Hyderabad, with a skeletal staff taken on deputation from the University of Hyderabad and the Osmania University.

The University has started functioning from 9th January 1998 with headquarters at Hyderabad. The campus is located in 200 acres of land. All the Offices have been shifted in February 2002 to the Administrative Building at University Campus of about 200 Acres at Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

The University is fully funded by the UGC (University Grants Commission) and functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The President of India is the Visitor to the University.

Shri I K Gujaral, former Prime Minister of India, was the first Chancellor of the University and Prof. Mohammed Shamim Jairajpuri was the first Vice-Chancellor. Shri Firoz Bakht Ahmed is the present Chancellor and Dr. Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz is a Vice-Chancellor.

The Act empowers the University to provide education through both the distance and campus modes of education. The University offers postgraduate, graduate, diploma and certificate courses through distance education.

It has uniquely partnered with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, by entering into a Memorandum of Collaboration which empowers this University to adopt, translate and offer any course of IGNOU into Urdu.
